Scauldrons are tidal class dragons who are known for spraying boiling water at their targets. It normally collects water in its cauldron like stomach and heats it making it ready to blast.

Abilities

Rechargeable Firepower

The Scauldrons are mostly considered as non-fire breathers, but they possess sources of heat other than a fire. According to Fishlegs, a Scauldron's water is hot enough to peel the scales off of a Screaming Death.

Because of their water-breathing ability, Scauldrons are one of the few dragons that can easily take down a Skrill. Because they live in water, Scauldrons are one of the few dragons to be able to refill their shot limit.

Venom and Immunity

It is revealed that the venom of these dragons is the only known antidote for dragons to the critically noxious Blue Oleander; they have tolerances to the flowers despite being an aquatic species. According to Hiccup, Scauldron venom can kill a human within 24 hours. According to Fishlegs a Scauldron venom might be delivered in the same way that snake venom is, being contained within their teeth as demonstrated by Mildew's Misery, and it's injected into their prey from a bite. An alternative to spreading their venom is they can combine with with their ability to spit boiling water.

They are immune to the Blue Oleander. They also appear to enjoy eating Blue Oleanders as a natural food source, as Hiccup deliberately used Blue Oleanders to attract a Scauldron. However, the flowers grow on land, so Scauldrons would have to leave the ocean to eat them. The flowers are what give the Scauldron their venom.

Strength and Combat

Scauldrons are shown to be able to use their jaws to crush a barrel with minimal effort. They also have strong, flexible tails, making them able to easily whip a Viking a long distance away. Considering their size, Scauldrons can take on a lot of pressure, as Bonecrusher's Conquest has shown to keep flying as Fishlegs ran up his neck, even after Meatlug bashed him in the head a few times. Scauldrons, like Scauldy are unable to get their wings out from a pile of rocks as seen in "Free Scauldy".

Hunting and Stealth

Scauldrons have shown to be able to hunt smaller sea dragons such as Seashockers. They hunt in a pair or more, and will chase their prey to a corner and attack. They have been shown to not be quitters unless their prey reunites with the pod.

Because most have a sea green color they can camouflage within the ocean and sneak up on prey.

Speed and Agility

Scauldrons are shown to be flexible as they are able to swing their head and tail around. They are also able to make quick turns while both flying or swimming.

While their speed stat was stated to be low, their speed underwater was proven to be fast enough to catch up to a Seashocker. On land, their short, stubby legs are strong enough to run fast enough to catch up to a Deadly Nadder.

Endurance and Stamina

Scauldrons are able to endure firepower from Monstrous Nightmares like Hookfang, plasma blasts from Toothless, and the brute strength of a Gronckle on the face. They're able to endure many electric attacks from Seashockers. They have high stamina and are able to chase down their prey for a long period of time, as they have been shown to travel at full speed and didn't give up chasing their prey. Hunting in pods, Scauldrons are one of the most dangerous species of dragons. If you fell in the water and started struggling, it wouldn't be long before you would start seeing Scauldrons showing up. Their incredible stamina proves that they can and will travel long distances to hunt for prey.

Senses

The Scauldron's sense of smell is shown to be very acute, as one individual was able to pick up the trail of Blue Oleanders that are being thrown into the sea. Two individual Scauldrons were able to track a Seashocker by hearing sounds Fishlegs made. Scauldrons have electrical senses to detect electrical pulses like sharks, skates, and rays. They can use this to track their favorite prey; Seashockers. They can also sense electric pulses even when they are above of water. However, due to this, Scauldrons can accidentally track down electric eels; one of the few things that they are afraid of.

Aquatic

Being Tidal Class, Scauldrons are able to stay underwater for long periods of time. They are very skilled swimmers, for they are able to keep up with smaller dragons, like Seashockers, and maneuver through tight spaces. In addition, as mentioned in Breampunk's description, Scauldrons are able to dive extremely deep, presumably meaning that they can stay at great depths for long periods of time as well. The Adolescent Scauldron that nearly got sucked into the Submaripper's whirlpool, was able to avoid being sucked in with a little help of the Dragon Riders.

Flammable Gel

According to Hiccup in DreamWorks Dragons: To Berk and Beyond!, Scauldrons can produce gel like Monstrous Nightmares, which can burn even when they are wet.

Weaknesses

Dry Land

Being Tidal Class dragons, Scauldrons can only stay out of the water for a short period of time. If they don't make it back in time, their skin will dry out and turn gray as they grow weak and become vulnerable to predators.

Limited Storage of Boiling Water

If a shot is fired at a Scauldron's jaws when they are inflated with boiling water, all of the water will spill out, disorienting the dragon and depriving them of their powerful ability. This weakness only applies to a Scauldron when it is on dry land, as the ocean has plenty of water to recharge their shot limit.

Pod Dependency

Scauldrons live in pods, which gives them their great power. When a Scauldron is without its pod, it can be defeated with less effort.

Tracking Electric Eels

Scauldrons can also mistake large and groups of small electric eels for a Seashocker, since the eels mess with the Scauldrons' natural electric sense.

Food Motivation

One can set a trap for this dragon by first attracting it with Blue Oleander. More specifically, leading it you by placing a trail. It will also be attracted to fish oil like that which Ruffnut Thorston puts in her hair.

Light

If you can block their vision with light reflected from a shiny object or a lens the Scauldron will retreat immediately.

Behavior and Personality

Like cetaceans and Thunderdrums, Scauldrons form pods. Both of these are whale-like dragons, and they are fearsome hunters, and are described to be 'meaner than sharks' and the 'original sea monster' by Dragonpedia.

Scauldrons can be rather aggressive and territorial at times. Scauldy displayed signs of aggression and attempted to harm the gang when they approached him. These reptiles will not hesitate to spray a mouthful of boiling hot water at its opponents when it senses danger. Gobber even further states the Scauldron is fearless, and consciousness, evidenced in how one individual attacked a Viking ship for the sake of consuming the blue oleander, despite being outnumbered. However, once a person gains its trust, a Scauldron can remain loyal and kind, as displayed by Scauldy to Ruffnut.

Scauldrons are known to be organized strategists who are patient. Similar to Seashockers, Scauldrons work together to take down prey in pods, this is extremely beneficial since they have been known to prey on other dragons, which may be hard to defeat alone.

Scauldrons, like most dragons, are scared of eels. But as shown in "Shock and Awe", they appear to be able to tolerate them better but not eat them) than most dragons because when one of the Scauldrons was presented with a large electric eel, it didn't immediately swim away. This is possibly because Scauldrons are a member of the Tidal Class, and have probably gotten used to the fact of sharing an ecosystem with Eels. Another reason is that their electrical senses made them attracted to the electric eel while being scared of it when they spot it.

Though Scauldrons can fly, they prefer to travel underwater, popping their heads to the surface occasionally to search for prey, enemies, and for air.

Training

File:Training a Scauldron is incredibly difficult and close to impossible due to their aggressive nature.gif

Like the Skrill and Whispering Death, training a Scauldron is incredibly difficult and close to impossible due to their aggressive nature. If you want to train a Scauldron, the best way to start is simply to cover yourself in water or anything that smells like fish. Scauldrons are sentimental creatures who love anything that reminds them of their home. Saving their life from certain situations can create a grateful and loyal friend who will also sacrifice his own being to keep you safe.

It is also possible to train a Scauldron by giving it Blue Oleander, just like offering other dragons their favorite food.

Appearances

Riders of Berk

It is first shown in the episode Dragon Flower when Hiccup, Stoick, Gobber, and Mildew try to get some of its venom to cure the Dragons of a sickness they caught by eating a certain flower. It make its last appearance in the season finale where Alvin keeps it prisoner.

Defenders of Berk

The Scauldron is featured in the episode Free Scauldy where while on a scouting mission Hiccup, Fishlegs and the Twins find one with its wing stuck under rocks on Changewing Island. They try to free it but the Scauldron is hostile and refuses to let them help, until it shows interest in the fish oils Ruffnut puts in her hair. Ruffnut then gets tips from Hiccup on how to train it. She names him Scauldy, then talks and sings to him to calm him down. His wing is broken so they make him a splint and end up using Ruffnut's hair, letting him swim freely once again, and get away from the angry Changewings.

Trivia

  • In "Dragon Flower", Gobber the Belch claims that the Scauldron is sixty feet long; however, all Scauldrons seen in the franchise so far were much longer. According to official models, Scauldrons are 102 feet 8 inches (31.3 meters) long, with a wingspan of 104 feet 4 inches (31.8 meters).
  • The Scauldron has several resemblances to rorqual, which is a classification of large baleen whales, as both have ridges underside of their body that expand in the same manner, and both have fins on tips of their tail, and they are about the same size.
  • The Scauldron's water-shooting ability is similar to water guns used by archer fish and several species of small cetaceans such as Irrawaddy dolphin.
  • The Scauldron's head shape is similar to Mola mola, the Sunfish.
  • The name Scauldron is a combination between the words "scald" and "cauldron". "Scauld" came from scalding its victims, while "cauldron" came from its cauldron-like stomach.
  • The Scauldron is the Seashocker's natural predator.

  • Its name is a pun off the word cauldron and scald.
  • Their skin pales when it starts to dry out.
